Class Mixer · Academic

Next year's classes, balanced
before lunch.

Class Mixer takes your new intake and the pupils already on roll, balances them into classes under the rules you set, and writes the result straight onto student records.

Three Year 1 classes, balanced on size, gender, SEN and EAL.

Class lists are still made on the classroom floor.

  1. Today · 01

    A fortnight of sticky notes

Every June a deputy head spreads names across a table, moves them around for days, then re-types the result into a spreadsheet.

  2. Today · 02

The rules live in people's heads

Which twins stay apart, which friends need a buffer, who needs a teaching assistant — it's remembered, not recorded, and it walks out the door with staff.

  3. Today · 03

Nobody can see if it's fair

One class ends up with most of the SEN support or all the summer birthdays, and you only find out in September.

Fair classes you can defend to any parent.

  1. A first draft in minutes

Pick the year group, set the number of classes, press generate. You start from a balanced draft, not a blank page.

  2. Rules written down once

Keep pupils together or apart, lock a child into a class, and carry those rules into next year's project.

  3. Balance you can see

Meters for class size, gender, SEN, EAL and ability bands update on every move, so an uneven class is obvious before it's final.

From intake to class lists in four steps.

  1. 01

Start a project for a year group

New joiners from admissions and pupils already on roll are pulled in together. Class sizes come from your year-group targets.

  2. 02

    Add what staff know

Record friendships, pairs to keep apart and pupils to lock in place. Family links are suggested for you, and you choose which to keep.

  3. 03

Generate, then refine in the grid

Every run is saved as a version. Drag pupils between classes, compare versions side by side, and let the grid warn you before a move breaks a rule.

Warnings appear the moment a hand edit breaks a rule.
  4. 04

    Accept onto student records

One click writes each pupil's new class onto their record and your class lists. The decision is logged, with who accepted it and when.

Questions about
Class Mixer.

Why is Class Mixer priced per year?

Because that's how schools use it: intensively once a year, when next year's classes are planned. One yearly price covers every year group and every project.

Do we need the rest of FirstDay to use it?

No. Class Mixer works on its own: import your pupils, make your lists, export or accept them. If you also run admissions in FirstDay, new joiners appear automatically.

Does the software decide for us?

No. It produces a balanced draft and explains why each pupil is where they are. Staff move anyone, lock anyone, and nothing reaches student records until someone accepts it.

Who can see SEN and friendship information?

Only staff whose role grants Class Mixer access. Sensitive fields follow the same role-based permissions as the rest of FirstDay, and every accepted change is written to the audit log.

Can we re-run it mid-year for a new class?

Yes. Start a new project for the year group at any time — the rules you recorded carry forward.
